Description WW2 Malta Convoy Casualty – HMS Arethusa, Killed on 18th November 1942. 1939-45 Star; Atlantic Star; Africa Star; defence medal; 1939-45 war Medal; Condolence slip , William George Leadbetter. C/MX 49786William George Leadbetter was born on the 10th May 1913. West Ealing, London He enlisted on the 12th June 1933, serving initially as Becoming Leading Seaman (Cook) on 10th November 1936, then Petty Officer from 4th June 1940. He served on the following Ships – HMS Bruce, Pembroke,Titania,Royal Sovereign (From 26th August 1939), Ganges, Highman Court, Scotia and finally on Arethusa from 14th April 1942. On the 13th June he was on HMS Arethusa when she was on escort duty for a Malta convoy. MW11 (Operation Vigorous) On the 14th they were under heavy attack by air and Submarine attack by U77.. In November  they were escort for the Malta relief convoy MW13 (Operation Stoneage)  having briefly returned to Alexandria the ship rejoined MW13 on the 18th November  and came under air attacking by torpedo carrying aircraft at dusk.  The ship was hit on her port side abreast B Turret and took a heavy list to port, extensive fires in the forward structure  and flooding. He died on the 18th November 1942 whilst serving on H.M.S. Arethusa. He is commemorated on the Chatham Naval Memorial. and is amongst 156 others killed during the attack.
